อัลบั้มที่ประทับใจผมที่สุดที่ซื้อมาในช่วงฉลองปีใหม่ที่ร้าน Gramophone (Paragon) ก็คืออัลบั้มเพลงประกอบภาพยนต์โดย Ennio Morricone เขาเป็นนักแต่งเพลงและ conductor จากอิตาลีซึ่งมีแนวทางการแต่งเพลงที่ไม่เหมือนใครในช่วงนั้น พื้นฐานของ Ennio เป็นเพลง Classic ที่มีแนวทางไปในลักษณะ Romantic แต่ไม่ฟู่ฟ่าหรือโฉ่งฉ่าง เน้นความสวยงามของเมโลดี้ theme / motif ตามลักษณะเพลงประกอบภาพยนต์ และใช้เพลงลักษณะนี้ในการประกอบภาพยนต์โดยเฉพาะแนว American Western / Cowboy ซึ่งทำได้อย่างลงตัวจนน่าตกใจ เหมือนเป็นการผสมผสานโลกเก่าของยุโรปมาห่อหุ้มภาพของโลกใหม่ในอเมริกา เขาร่วมกับผู้กำกับเช่น Sergio Leone นำแนวทางการทำหนังแบบยุโรป มาทำหนังฮอลีวู๊ตได้อย่างน่าอัศจรรย์ โดยเฉพาะเมื่อมีดนตรีประกอบซึ่งสามารถดึงอารมณ์ได้รุนแรงที่สุด เช่นในเรื่อง Once upon a time in the West
เพลงที่ผมชอบที่สุดในอัลบั้มคือเพลง Deborah’s theme ของเรื่อง Once upon a time in America ซึ่งใช้เวลาเพียงราว 4 นาที และ Masto e Margherita ราว 5 นาที เป็นเมโลดี้ซึ่งไม่ซับซ้อนแต่สวยงามอย่างที่สุด อิจฉริยะของEnnio อยู่ที่การเรียบเรียงเสียงประสาน (Orchestration) ในแนว Chamber orchestra คือไม่เยอะหรือดังเกินไป ซึ่งการทำ Harmony ของโน็ตในทีมแต่ละตัวสามารถทำได้อย่างเรียบง่ายแต่ลึกซึ้งจนเกือบจะลึกลับเสียด้้วยซ้ำ ฟังจบแล้วน้ำตาจะไหลเลยครับ
เพลงส่วนใหญ่เป็นแนว chamber หรือ orchestra ที่ไม่ใหญ่นัก เน้น piano และเครื่องดนตรีเด่นไม่กี่ชิ้น ไม่มีการโฉ่งฉ่างแบบดนตรีประกอบภาพยนต์ทั่วไป สรุปได้ว่าเป็น Romantic ที่เดินแบบ classicist และมีกลิ่นของ 20th century แต่พองามครับ
